Okay so as you may know my family runs a betta fish adoption org. and as such I have always tried to talk folks out of breeding their betta fish due to the fact that they are a specialty fish and most lose intrest when they cant have more fish with them . And as such end up flushing or hopefully giveing away the fish . Well we have had them for awhile now and want to take our betta keeping to the next level , and our "Alpha" has never had a girlfriend and is the most amazing betta I've ever had or known. He has shared tanks with almost every fish I have had with NO aggressionn shown , for whatever reason he just is peacefulll and he is healthy as we thought for sometime that was the cause of him bein so laid back but hes just a very calm happy fish . That being said my wife found a female in the classic plastic half cup living in her own toilet ....she of course brought her home and informed me that this fish was to be alpha's wife lol . While she is a very beautful betta white with pink and blue streaks . He doesnt like her I dont think , I dont know though he could have been showing somekind of spawning dance or something for all I know thats why I'm posting this . I have had success with multiple egglayers and every livebaerer but the bubble nest breeders are very new to me . Any help would be great . I need a how to on breeding them please . I will be researching also but would value first hand info from guys I trust . When do i add them together? water temp dureing spawn? diet? time together ? do i have to seperate them ? you get the idea I need everything lol

Well, the males will do a spawning dance and flare their fins and gills to show off. In all labyrinth type fish, it seems that the most important thing is that the female is ready to breed and is full of eggs. Otherwise, the males might just kill them. Raising the temperature seems to be a standard for most tropicals when it comes to breeding. As you know, live food is a real kick starter. I'll bet mosquito larvae would turn them on. I'd work on getting them both in top condition away from each other. Then give them a period of time where they can flirt but not touch. I would make the mating tank neutral or the female's territory. As soon as mating has occurred and the male is putting the eggs in the bubble nest, remove the female. When the eggs hatch, remove the male. I believe the fry need infusoria to start. You can buy starter stuff from fish stores or make it yourself. Let a lettuce leaf sit out and wilt until it is very limp. Then put it in a jar of water until the water gets cloudy. The cloudiness is infusoria. Just pour what you think is right in the tank. The next step would probably be live baby brine shrimp. There are all kinds of commercial fry food out there, and it might be OK but, I know you love your natural stuff. During the baby brine shrimp stage, I'd sneak some very finely crushed flake in there to get them used to it. That's all I've got.

Way back when, a friend of mine used to have a cool betta tank. It was probably 8" high and deep and about 3 feet long. There were slots about every eight inches where you could put either clear or black dividers. You can imagine the variety of ways you could manage such a tank. The breeding issue brought that to mind because, wow, such a tank would be ideal for all but the fry grow out stage.

That is an awsome tank ., I put my betas together for the first time ( female stayed in a plastic container ) an watched their reactions . Alph showed his fins full out show to I mean it was awsome to see him show off but she turned out her gills for a sec then just ignored him like he wasnt their / lol it really ticked him off to he circled that cup round and round tryin his best to get in front of her but she just keep turning away ... I was wondering if this was a sign of aggression or mateing ? He wasnt thumping the glass or nothing but I dont know enough , I put her in my 55 community tank with the rest of the world and she is in love with my fluval under water filter lol she stays in the bubbles I keep it on A setting where the airation is best . I wanted to know if you think i could put them in a 10 gallon together for a few minutes and see what happens or is it a bad bad bad idea ?

If you think she has eggs, give it a try. I don't think it's so much of a pairing off process with bettas. I'd be sitting there with net in hand. She's just playing hard to get.

See I dont think shes got eggs yet , she doesnt appear gravid at all . I think shes old enough but Im not really sure you see shes as all of them are is a wal-mart rescue . But size wise I think shes mature . Would I need to put them together for a few minutes to throw her into producing eggs or will she just become gravid when she reaches maturity ?

I think she's going to need a little coaxing in the form of being courted from a safe place. That and good food will get her to start producing eggs. Maybe I'm being too cautious. I'd just hate to see things go bad for you. Also, I think it would be a good idea to let the little girl relax and enjoy the good life for a while after her time at WalMart.

Make it a member here and a group on the FKU Facebook page. That way, hell, three maybe four people will learn about it.

We did a little rescuing of our own today. My son, Martin, brought home a female veil tail from Petco. They rank right up there with WalMart for betta care. She's a tiny thing, about 1 1/4 " long with no extra weight on her. She's mostly a very light violet with red fins. I think she's going to be really pretty when she grows a little. No plans to breed her and Blue. Just thought of her name...Violet. Violet and Blue. Sounds like something out of Gone With The Wind.

Cool Frank ! always glad to hear another saved from the market man good job ! Dan , we have a small , tiny , little thing my daughter an son got started up as yet another family project lol we have a few 10's and a old 20 that have ben divided with homemade walls and filled with bettas from wal-mart . We do get from people to though but we go to wal-mart and check the bettas and always get the worst one (s) and bring them home and treat them and re-home them . Its non - profit thats for sure lol but we get great feelings and bags full of self gratafication . We get the betta healed up ( raerly ) it usually dont make it we have about 2 out of 8 that make it . We can t get them all as you know an by the time we get the ones that we do they usually have ammonia poisoning so bad all we really do is make it comfortable for them . That said we do have the occasional tough guy or gal . Once its healthy we talk to friends and ppl we know an get a home for it an we supply a tank with all the supplys you need to care for the fish all the person has to do is accept an love the fish . Its only possible because they can have a 5 gal tank so it costs me about 35.00 to do it . and i would suggest it to you both . maybe we could really make something out of it .I gotta go but ill post more later
