Many folks equate cold water tanks with goldfish and assume that this is the easy way to go. The fact is we are just making trade-offs for different important requirements. Tropicals require consistent temperatures and, many times, varied environments and water parameters to be kept successfully. Goldfish typically require larger tanks due to their size, respiration, and waste production. More vigorous filtration and especially frequent partial water changes are very important. Decor such as live plants is a bit more challenging due the goldfish's tendency to eat plants. This is not to say it's the devil or the deep blue sea. It's just a reminder that all pets require a degree of care and you should keep them only if you have the willingness to meet their requirements. To do otherwise will only cause suffering for you and your pet. Amen.

Amen Brother Frank , My son has a 30 gal coldwater tank and needs a 100 gal to be honest . We are shopping for a good old fashioned hard plastic kiddie pool for a nice shaddy part of the yard ( cat free ) . This or its gonna be one of those storage bins . I've used them before for my guppys when I had to many and no place else for them to go . They actually work very well and cheap you just cant veiw them as in a tank but as far as the fish being comfortable its great .

My storage tote for the platys is working out pretty well. I had to remove some of the hornwort and throw it in the goldfish pond the other day. As you said, not very good for viewing but, I'm sick of looking at them anyway.

I have aquired some platies myself ( mickey mouse golden ) to be exact . I usually get the fry when I go to petsmart to feed to my oscars they will give you the fry for free since they cant sell them all you have to do is ask for them . Its cheaper than buying feeders and the fish are usually in better health than the feder fish they sell . Anyway I got them home and both times know I saw a strange looking baby as the fry are always guppy lol this one looked diffrent so we kept it now we have 5 mickey mouse golden platties , they add a little variety to the tank I like them so far and if they become a problem they will meet the oscar family lol. Speaking of platties I saw a new species ( Panda ) platties at petsmart and like them they are a very cool looking fish has anyone else ever seen them ?

Can't say as I've seen them. I love the way platys look and behave. It's just the population explosion that is hard for me to handle. Sharon thinks they're the cutest things in the world, so there's another obstacle. She'd probably divorce me if she caught me feeding them to something.

From what I seen they are all similar in marking white body with a black tail kinda like the phantom guppy coloration but brighter . I had similar problems with my wife over feeders after I had them a while in Q tank she became attached aaagggghhh .. After a little thought I conived a plan and it actually worked lol mark it in the books men got one lol .anyway here it is , Your gonna have t get her her very own predator , get a baby tiger oscar or texas red chiclid anyone that eats live she'll proclaim it her baby and toss the others in to its tank so her baby can be healthy nd happy .

LOL it worked for me , now the only problem I have is my better half has to be watched cause she'll toss in my good guppys . Certin ones arent feeders lol I actually have a few to many years invested into this little project and finally have consistant results thaty are healthy and not related that I am able to sell with confadence . Though their are still the occasinal deformaty a "s" shaped spine or a slumped spinal formation and those are the ones that get to met the oscar's . My wife wil take whatever she gets in the net first she doesnt share my love for the guppys .

You need to figure out a way to pad lock the cover down on your tanks while you're away. You may have created a monster.
