Okay as asked , My reason for the invert addiction ..
I just think the lil guys are a blast to watch in the tank running around over everything all the time wide open , and they are fast like cant see them when they want to get somewhere fast . First you see one and if he feels threatend poof he's gone . I have had them literaly jump out of the tank from atleast 10-11 inches down in one jolt of the tail .
They are excalent cleaners for a tank as well , plus they arent shy like most bottom feeders you dont have to hunt them down to enjoy them , very active day and night . Diffrent species are very diffrent to , i.e ghost / glass / grass shrimps are a very combatative shrimp and cannot be housed with any other as they will kill them . This is not a maybe it will happen so be warned these lil clear guys are very bad news to cherries an snowballs ,. But they will ''spar'' or ''box'' each other in the sub when they bump into each other while eating or cleaning and while it could turn serious I suppose its been my experiance with them that as far as inner species fights are usually just for show and noone gets hurt , just fun to watch them circle each other with their hands up looks like two lil girls slappin at each other lol
These are great beginner shrimp as they are cheap , hardy , and cool .You can literally see their organs inside you will see what they are eating , I can tell you wich of mine like algae and who likes the pellets I give my cats .
The crystal reds are new to me I do not have any yet ( as no breeder while call me back ) And they are expensive too about 12.00 each . But they are a long livein shrimp and have a candycane pattern of red with white stripes , very handsome guys . And peacefull . While most species are the ghost/glass are the only ones that are considerd aggressive , and the aggressive label only applies to inner shrimp as they wont harm any fish , I have them in with guppy fry and havent lost one not even sickly ones that might lay on bottom to rest .
The cherry are red and alot smaller than the ghost but just as active and out live them by yrs as well . Though are slower to reproduce once they do start to they will continue and thrive provideing you keep water good .
Snowball shrimp get the name from the eggs look like snowballs in their tails . The ghost/glass eggs look like antifreeze berries in their tails lol only way to describe the color sory .
Their is a hybrid of the crystal red as well called ''bumble bee'' these guys are super tiny even guppys might feed on them so be carefull if you choose them as to tank mates .
Sayin that tank mates for any shrimp go as follows , any fish that can fit your shrimp in its mouth will prolly eat it . That simple .
I have mainly small fish even my chics are smaller than most so its not an issue for me but in a tank with a large gourami or angel I could forsee a problem potentially . It should go with out sayin I would think about oscars .. The silver dollars and types such as them ...well I'd say that as juvies the shrimp would be fine but as the fish mature they might change their minds about the shrimp and see them as food vs. friend .
I house a generation of ghost with a betta from a wal=mart rescue and at first he was curiouse of the shrimp but when he got close one threw up its front legs or arms or whatever they have in front and the betta ''alpha'' just went on like he was amused at the lil guys arrogance .
It all comes down to a very active addition to your tank , the shrimp will be seen at every level from the bottom to the top at all times of the hour even upside down walkin on the underside of decor . They just add life , and help balance your eco inside your glass world . I hope this helps some of you to re-think your position on the guys as not just a food source and see them as a possible addition to your fish family . I promise if you get some you will always have them and always be on the look out for new ones .
God bless
