Signs of plant health
Knowing how to reconize and cure plant problems before they get severe can help you avoid losein your aquatic plants
I put this list of warning signs together for a person to look or when doing your day to day maintanance on your tank .
Holes in plants - This is often caused by fish nipplein at them , if your fish are vegitarians they will see the plants as a food source so get cheap ones as you will lose them almost weekly . If your plants begin to fall apart after the holes appear then it could be ''rot'' wich is usually caused by excess nitrates water changes help to correct this problem .
Leaves turning yellow - You are probably suffering from an '' iron '' deficiancy . You'll need a good fert to fight this off . I use seachams personally as it was suggested to me by everyone I know . But Hagen Nutrafin Plant gro iron enriched is what I used before , and honestly see no diffrence in the two except for price .
Leaves turning brown / black - This indicates decay , probably from to much ''iron'' . It is important to read the label of any fert and follow the instructions . To much is bad and not enough is pointless . But to the problem black /brown leaves from high iron can be treated by water changes .
Plants are dying , and some are thrieving - Plants are just like fish in the sence that (A) they are alive and (B) they are sensative to the hard and softness of water .
Hard-water plants are more able to extract Co2 from water , whereas soft-water plants have a harder time doin this . Make sure you have enough Co2 in your water for each type of plant .
If you want to keep hard & soft platns together in a aquarium you will need to have Co2 added .
Rmember that Co2 softens water to though so watch for water changes if you do add a Co2 input of somekind .
