Hello y'all , I have seen numerous people in the hobby looking for something new or unique , well myself as well to be honest . I think we all get so used to are fish the ones we started with or what the store had that untill yrs later dont realize the options that are present with this hobby . I would like to move into ''killifish'' and have done a little research and have found a beautiful species with many types rangein from marine to freshwater . I wanted to put this out to anyone interested in a new setup not requireing a huge deal of space or equipment . Most of the killi's are perfect in 10 gallon tanks with 2-3 pairs . The male to female ratio with killis is one for one a little diffrent than most fish . The killi are egg layers and very uniq ones at that some lay in plants some in substrate and some lay eggs in areas so that they will dryout for a short period . Those are the most amazing to me , the '' nothobranhius patrizii'' are such a fish . Amazing colors and methods . They lay eggs on a flood plain to hatch when the rains return the following season . They also like a saltier water than the other killi's . Killi fish are a very beautiful fish and hardy they will adapt to a range of waters and temps . They also require very small amounts of space so they are great for 10 - 20 gal setups wich most have . The biggest point I can make about these beautys is that they require a better diet than just flakes , if you want them healthy , happy and reproductive then you need to use a frozen and live foood diet of bloodworms , as the fry like microworms and babybrine . Let me know what you think about these as a fish and possable new breeding venture for me and my family I would value any and everyones opinion thanks Heres some types to check out - Aphyosemion , Epiplatys , Fundulopanchax species of killifish . A good source is Fishchannel.com/AKAKillifish

Killifish are beautiful and they have a wide range of colors and size and habits. Back in the day, there was a fish shop around here that specialized in them. They were priced beyond my meager fish budget at the time. The only killifish that I have kept is the Flag Fish. It is native to Florida. It's very different looking than the typical killi in shape. It almost reminds you of a dwarf cichlid or a young Texas Cichlid. When I was a little kid, you could buy these kits advertised on the back of comic books that promised instant tropical fish. You received a plastic bowl that probably held about 1/2 gallon of water and a bag of peat moss. You were supposed to put the peat moss in the bowl and fill with water and, in no time, you'd have tropical fish. It didn't work for me but, those were probably killifish eggs in the peat.
I would think that breeding them would be interesting in any event. Insofar as a connection with your business, you might see if you can get a feel for the demand.
I'm glad you brought this up. I haven't thought about killifish in years.

Your right about the eggs in the peat , killis do that . If the eggs dont hatch then redry the peatmoss and in a few weeks wet agin .
I was trying to help a freind find a new species to breed they wanted a lil challeng and something uniqe so I hit the web and my vast collection of fish mags that decorate the corners of my den lol ( wife loves them she just wont admitt it ) . I brought up african butterfly fish , bristlenose placos , anything I found that was uncommon but something just didnt get his attention . It was hard to as his equipment wasnt for many species it limits the search . The killis hit me though if not for him I wanted them for myself , I feel in love all over agin so many species to pick from so many diffrent styles of breeding and the colors wow . The site I listed is a fish magazine I get its got good info on alot of diffrent topics .

Well I think its gonna have alot to do with wich species you go with . Their are 3 major species of killi , and each one breeds very diffrently . I of course cant decide wich to go with ....so I am considering a tank of each species . Kinda experament of sorts , see what it takes for each and post on it . See which I can get to breed and which wont and record it an let eveyone know . I do have a favorite though , the fundulopanchax species being the one I feel the best about comfort wise and breeding difficulty is easy . This species breeds in the floating vegatation of a permanent setup . As a species they are some of the more aggressive killi's and should be a species only tank . As a choice I like ( '' F. gardneri '' ) they have awsome colors but its very hard to sex them male & females are almost identical but . I also really like the F. gardneri nigerianus , so I'm asking y'all to help me decide please . Look'em up and let me know wich you want to hear me blab about for the next 6-7 months lol .

Well, that sucks, Charlie. You're right. You have to be careful...at least until you can effect their bottom line. Maybe look into Killifish clubs that have sites. You'll be dealing with people who know the fish and won't want to look bad by providing bad fish and having it reported over the forum.
