Salt water fish are a diffrent breed than freshwater for those that are planning on advanceing to saltwater be warned lol .Most marine fish are little social time bombs waiting to explode all over the other fish in your tank , in fact they can be just plain ole rude to each other . Whereas fresh water have reached a state of being with each other and are pretty cool to a point with most other species .
A beginner can maintane a saltwater setup though your lessons will be expensive to learn if you dont have a friend with a few yrs under they're belt .
Many fish and inverts dont mix well together either so be very careful in selection of your fish . Research is a must with saltwater . Parrot fish for example enjoy eating several types of inverts, to set up a peacefull commuinty that wont destroy itself you need to know what your getting .
Marine fish are much more sensative than freshwater to even the slightest changes in their aquarium conditions This aint sayin they will automaticly die the second the temp drops , however if the temp and salinity doesnt stay constant you could easily lose a tank full of fish . Whereas freshwater are way more adaptable or foregiving rather to changes in the tank .
That being said the marine fish are usually more dazzeling colorfull although prices are very diffrent most think its well worthit for the serious hobbyiest . Compare a plain fancy guppy to a queen triggerfish and you can see what I mean . Also you usually cant keep the numbers in salt groups that you can in freshwater as a result of size diffrence in the two types .
Personally I love both marine as well as fresh , just take your time in selection with either and use good equipment and most of all maintane your tanks needs and you will have a wonderfull addition to your home and family .
