Recent lighting changes to 3 of my tanks have made it possible for me to start using timers. The old lights had starters / ballasts that weren't compatible with timers. Due to my schedule, it was pretty much impossible to maintain a standard schedule and my plants and tanks were suffering. The change since adding the timers has been dramatic. The plants are much healthier and algae is minimal. I use simple GE models that cost only $6.95 at The Home Depot. For those of you finding it difficult to maintain a consistent lighting schedule, I strongly recommend the use of timers. I have found them to be every bit as important as the lights themselves.

I've been thinking about getting one of those , the timers I mean . The petsmart I use has them as well as Wal-mart and they are fairly cheap . I work nights and as such my tanks get more light than is usual for them , turn on around 8 or 9 in the morning and I turn them off when I get home about 1:30 or 2 in the mornin . Growth is good though and my new bulbs are sprouting , even got my amazon and ano's are flowering so I dont know if I really want to change lol . But I have noticed a diffrence in my fish , temperment and spawning has changed in the last month . Attitudes are bad with 3 and I havent had a fry in a month ...strange for guppy tank to miss a month without new younng .. y'all think it could be due to the extra hours of light ? I didnt think about it as a possability with the temoerment before ...or the fry not showing up this month . I noticed a new fish my wife got and dumped right in my tank no quarintine what so ever unless you count the car ride home from the store . It has a awfull case of fin rot and it was in my community tank !!!! thank you wife !!! and this tank is heavily populated with inverts snails and shrimp so thats great , no meds without copper . I got a bottle of mexalin but I have never used it for fin rot before ..think it would work ?

Charlie, it doesn't sound like you need to make any changes for your plants but, lighting could fit right in with the temperature and rainfall (very good info) aspects that you mentioned. From what I've heard about fin rot, the key word is "clean". I have a betta that had a bad case of it...fins looked absolutely shredded. I read where it was a bacterial thing. I started doing water changes twice a week in his tank and he cured himself. Maybe try more frequent water changes and see what happens.

Will do on the water changes usually do them on a sunday I'll throw in a wensday change to . Always do round 30% think I should increase the size of the change ? Also today I had fry show up so thats good , thats great actualy I was freaking out ! Thought that my girls had mis carried or something . They new babbies are good very solid looking but numbers are way lower than expected . Im seeing alot of this though as the breeding furthers I get a female to fry and the first day get like 5-7 then day 2 I get 9-12 but almost never all the same day . And they almost always do it right after a water change . I mean that to you can set you watch by them doin it the day after water change day . This month they did it the day before though as well as being a few days late on the birth in the first place ..but it is possable that i had my dates recorded wrong ( unlikely) but possable lol I keep a legal pad that has every detail wrote in it everyday after monitering each tank for about 20-30 minutes each and watching as they eat a meal . I found that doin this is helpfull , I know whats really happenin in the tank health wise before its a problem as well as habits of my fish . Where as dates and habits may be confused if not written down .

I would do a 20% water change, it is a lot healthier as you run the risk of starting the cycling process again
