I've been using API Ammo Lock as my water conditioner because it doesn't lock up the heavy metals and other fertilizer nutrients like so many other conditioners, yet it treats for chlorine and chloramine. This allows me to add ferts at the same time as water changes... no waiting till the next day. Recently, I've been wondering if this is the smart product to use since ammonia is an important nutrient for plants. Is my current approach counter productive ? Thanks for any input.

This is a great question Frank , I wish I was more chemistry savy and could give a definate answer but alas Im a redneck hobbyist with a wet green thumb lol . This is the type of question that I have been wanting to see though an am very interested in since their are so many diffrent kinds of chemicals now in the hobby and so many diffrent manufactorers of them to boot . I have always been a die hard Tetra user and then over time slowly progressed to API and Zoo Med . Recenly I purchased Seachums water chemicals with the you get what you pay for idea and let me tell ya that doesnt apply to aquatic chemicals ! Your better off sticking with what you know in this hobby . I have seen countless remarks about Prime on site and it sux for me as well as the Seachum Bio start my tanks stayed cloudy and water test were wildly diffrent week to week . As soon as I went baxk to my Zoo med stress coat and API stress zyhme my tanks cleared up and water tests stabelized so you tell me , cheaper is better or not ? I would think that their would be diffrent types of ammonia or some sort of variable but Im not sure ...If you always used the ammo lock then I would keep on useing it or follow a friend's treatment routine that had similar tank set ups as you . Agin thats just an opinion , like I said I changed from my old ways in favor of up grading in my mind and my tanks sufferd for it . If you want to try something diffrent because your worried about the affect of the ammo lock try just useing stress coat as a conitioner its really good and doesnt affect anything else it just treats the chlorine and adds to the slime coat has no affect on metals or anything else .

Thanks for the advice, Charlie. Stress Coat is what I used to use the most. I guess I haven't seen any real difference since I switched to Ammo Lock. I think I'm getting paranoid with the algae issue.

It's cool . it happens . When ever something goes wrong we start to over analize our every move . Its a sign of a good fish dad / owner . Means you cair about them thats good . I would go back to the stress coat though like you said you used to use it and never had any problems . Just sounds like you did what i did and tried to up grade your chemicals to some of the new school stuff . I'm leaving the seachums and other weird new things to the younger hobbyist lol and I'm sticking with my plain old stuff it works for me and has for years I dont know why I ever wanted to change .
