I have seen a lot of conversation lately concerning whether it is best to keep bettas alone or in an appropriate community environment. While I like the idea of them having a little more stimulation with tank mates, I haven't had good luck with them in the company of other fish. What have other members' experiences been and what works for you ? Thanks.

I have a betts ''male half veil'' in a 10 gal with no other fish except for inverts , I have a generation of ghost / glass shrimp in with him . While at first alpha was curiouse about the new critters he after a few minutes of checking them out is happy to leave them be . I do have a hollow fake log with silk flowers in the center of the tank they can get in if needed but have as of yet been okay . He does actually seem to enjoy the company , since we added the shrimp he has started swimming the length of the tank more ( without sign of aggressionn such as raisein his fins ) and being just more active vs. before when he was alone he mainly just floated around except for meal times . I personally think its been a good change for him .

Charlie, I'd like to know more about what attracts people to shrimps and what kind of tank mates they can have.

I have shrimp. I just bought them because they are pretty fun to watch. I have them with all my livebearer adults.

Back on the community idea with bettas .. I read someplace tonight that bettas are bad to nipp their own fins ..is this true ? If so is it true the reason is depression like I heard ? It was said that the ones that do this the nippin are depressed and need comapions or tank mates , stated that some while being very few and far between some bettas needed company preferd to be in community with other fish and would suffer from segragation in ways such as fin nippin much like a bored dog chases its tail the fish will imitate this out of boerdomb seeking interaction . I dont know wether to give this any serious consideration as I cant even remember where I read it ( I read alot ) I am a big booky nerd man I read all kinds of crap on aquatics as you guys can prolly tell from the way I ramble on any topic lol sory for that way to much useless info bouincin round in my neck knot to hold in or actually stay on a single topic . Also the reason for my numerous little experaments and projects

I think you're both right. I'm surprised some of those betta folks out there haven't set up counseling sessions for their fish. Maybe they have ! Imagine a betta stretched out on a tiny couch with a psychiatrist sitting there taking notes.

The longer i have alpha the more i find myself intreged by him the bettas are a beautiful fish and very smart and playful . to the point of curiosity causeing problems for some owners i've found . I wish i could have a tank full of them could you imagine a 30 or 50 gal with 25 or so males in it ? a schoal of nale bettas hmm that would be an awsome sight if it were possible . i know its not so dont worry lol just saying with the mental of a betta on the couch lol i had the pic in my head of a tank full it would be somethinng to see wouldnt it all those fins together the colors it would look like a big liveing ball of silk on fire or some thing of the like , okay i cant describe things very well but it be cool looking lol

I have a dream, where one day all the little fish of the world could coexist so you could have a school of male hertz's or clownfish with goldfish. I have a dream
